Secretary-General convenes climate change summit for world leaders

On the eve of the annual debate in the UN General Assembly, world leaders expressed their views on how to address climate change at a special summit organized by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. It is the last stop on the journey to signing a new treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emission at this December’s climate change meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Maritime workers to get support from global HIV partnership


UN agencies have joined with groups which represent the welfare of seafarers and others who work on the high seas to better educate this workforce about HIV. The Global Partnership on HIV and Mobile Workers in the Maritime Sector was launched at the 10th International Symposium on Maritime Health, which opened in Goa, India, this week. The goal is to help change certain high risk sexual behaviours of this group and the communities they interact with, and to develop and implement sound working policies and programmes to support this.

Afghanistan celebrates International Day of Peace


Blue and white kites were flown in Kabul as part of the activities for the International Day of Peace, celebrated on September 21st. Khaled Hossaini, author of the bestselling books 'The Kite Runner’ and 'A Thousand Splendid Suns,’ joined hundreds of adults and children in flying the kites, which were produced by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). Hossaini, a goodwill envoy with UNHCR, talks about the importance of convincing ordinary Afghans of a better future. He says “we’re fighting a war on poverty as much as we’re fighting a war against the insurgents-and that is a war we have to win in this country.”
