UN condemns assassination of female legislator in Afghanistan

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, also known by its acronym UNAMA, has strongly condemned the assassination of a female legislator. Setara Achakzai [A-ki-zai], a member of the provincial council of Kandahar, was shot dead by two motorcyclists in Southern Afghanistan, a former Taliban stronghold.

IFAD helps adapt technology to the needs of poor farmers in China

Until recently, poor farmers in Guangxi province in Southern China burned wood for cooking and heating. Now they’re leading a sustainable energy revolution. Through a Government project supported by IFAD, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, farmers are capturing methane from animal droppings and human waste to produce their own fuel!

On January 8, 2009, Sri Lankan journalist and newspaper editor Lasantha Wickrematunge was assassinated. He was fatally shot by two gunmen on motorcycles.  Mr. Wickrematunge has been chosen to receive the UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize for 2009. UNESCO’s Mogens Schmidt is familiar with the life and work of Mr. Wickrematunge and spoke with UN Radio’s Gerry Adams about him.
