Afghanistan was a major focus at UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s monthly press conference on Thursday, held just days after his meeting US President Barack Obama in Washington. Journalists asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon about Mr. Obama’s decision to send additional troops to Afghanistan.

With continued fighting between the military in Sri Lanka and members of the LTTE, the Tamil Tiger rebels, the UN and NGOs are voicing concern about the fate of civilians trapped in a tiny corner in the north of the country. Robert Templer, the Director of the Asia Division of the International Crisis Group, says more than two thousand people have died since late January.

Women from around the world converged at the UN for the annual session of the Commission on the Status of Women this month. This year’s discussion centered around women and men sharing responsibilities when it came to care-giving, especially to do with HIV. UN Radio’s Beng Poblete-Enriquez caught up with a Senator from the Philippines, Pia Cayetano, who had strong ideas about her country meeting the Millennium Development goal of reducing deaths during and after pregnancy.
