Global Handwashing Day is Celebrated

UN Calling Asia – a weekly 14-minute magazine programme, in English, that keeps you in touch with UN developments covering Asia and the Pacific.

More than 70 countries are observing the first-time event designed to encourage handwashing as a simple, life-saving practice. Therese Dooley is the Senior Adviser for Sanitation and Hygiene at UNICEF, the UN Children's Fund, in New York;

On October 9th, the DPRK, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, informed the IAEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency, that effective immediately, its inspectors would no longer be permitted to have access to facilities at Yongbyon. Fast forwarding just a few days, to October 13, the IAEA received another message from the DPRK;

Some 190 thousand Pakistanis and Afghans have been displaced from the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan since fighting began in the hilly region in mid-August. According to the non-governmental organization Amnesty International, the displaced persons are escaping fighting in Pakistan but they are at risk of being caught in the crossfire of the current fighting in Afghanistan between coalition forces and the Taleban and other anti-government groups. Ron Redmond is the Spokesperson for the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR;

And finally, a charity concert held in Petra, Jordan to honour a great opera singer and United Nations Messenger of Peace will benefit Afghanistan.
