A New Report Calls for an Effective Response to AIDS in Asia

Every year, more than 300 000 people in Asia die from AIDS. And a new UN-backed report finds that by the year 2020, unless serious measures are taken, up to eight million people in the region could find themselves infected with HIV.

Violence in Nepal Threatens Upcoming Elections

Nepal is two weeks away from critical elections that will give it its first Constituent Assembly, which will draft a constitution for the country. But violence continues to plague election preparations in some parts of Nepal. There is concern that fear might stop voters from participating in the elections, which may even be cancelled. UN Radio's Gail Bindley-Taylor Sainte spoke with the head of the UN Mission in Nepal, Ian Martin. He says the political parties met on Monday and confirmed their commitment to observe the election code of conduct and prevent violence by its members.

UN Rapporteur on Torture Shocked by Treatment of Detainees in Nigeria and Sri Lanka

In his annual report to the Human Rights Council this year the UN Rapporteur on Torture and other cruel or degrading treatment, made recommendations on broadening the definition of torture and reported on his recent country visits.
