WHO’s report on tobacco offers new opportunity for confronting global smoking epidemic

The World Health Organization this week released a new report-the first in-depth analysis of global tobacco use and control. The Organization’s hope is that countries around the world will use the data and the package of interventions which the report promotes to help them cut down on the numbers of people who died each year from tobacco-related illnesses worldwide. UN Radio’s Elena spoke with Dr. Douglas Bettcher, Director of WHO’s Tobacco Free Initiative about the report and its recommendations.

Young Afghan man faces military trial for a crime committed as a child soldier

A military commission at the United States Guantanamo Bay military prison is reviewing the case of Omar Khadr, who was captured as a combatant in Afghanistan in 2002. This case is of particular concern to the UN Children’s agency because the man is being held for crimes he allegedly committed when he was only fifteen years old. UN Radio’s Reem Abaza, discusses this case with Geoffrey Kell, who deals with child protection at UNICEF.

“A Place to Call Home”-how the Rohingya refugees in south Bangladesh spend their days while waiting for a solution

Part 11 in our series “A Place to Call Home”-the story of the Rohingya refugees. Last week we began to look at the situation of the 26,000 Rohingya refugees who remain in Bangladesh waiting in some cases to go home to Myanmar, or as is the case more recently, to see if they will qualify to go to a third country where they could re-start their lives. But for now they remain in UNHCR sponsored camps or the Government makeshift camp close to the Bangladesh border with Myanmar in largely sub- standard conditions–a situation that both UNHCR and the Government of Bangladesh continue to address. In this edition we look at how the pass their time and the challenge both UNHCR and the Government face to educate and empower this community.
