Two-year-old Ismael Adam receives a drink of water from his kin and caretaker Kariya Mohamed Abbakar, a 50-year-old native of Jebel Saiey, North Darfur, who has been living in the Abu Shouk Camp for internally displaced persons (IDP) near El Fasher for the past 10 years. Mrs. Mohamed Abbakar walks a long distance every week to fetch water from the nearest water point in the camp.

With its large drum capacity (usually 75 litres), the device frees women and children from having to spend a large portion of every day dedicated to collecting water for their households. The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) has distributed some 3,000 such rollers across Darfur.
