International Day for Mine Awareness and Action: "Lend Your Leg" Campaign

Affiliates of international organizations working to eliminate landmines take part in a “Lend Your Leg” event, and roll up their pants leg in solidarity with landmine victims. This is the second year to see the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action (4 April) marked by “Lend Your Leg” activities across the globe. Organizations represented by the group pictured include the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the South Sudan Mine Action Authority, Danish Demining Group (DDG), Mines Advisory Group (MAG), The Development Initiative (TDI), G4S and MineTech International.

Ten-year-old Suleiman Fatul Saim, from Dar Al Salam, North Darfur, suffered burns to more than 90 per cent of his body when his brother detonated an unexploded device that he found near their house in November 2006.

Harum Ali, a 17-year-old from Mellit, North Darfur, is recovering in El Fasher, where he was evacuated after being seriously injured while playing with his younger brothers with a small piece of artillery found outside their home. His two brothers, two and seven years old, were killed by the explosion from the unexploded ordnance (UXO).
