United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) Withdrawn

The United Nations flag lowered at "King's Gate" check post on the Gaza-Tel Aviv road as a mark of UNEF's withdrawal from all observation posts along the Armistice Demarcation Line and the International Frontier. The withdrawal became effective at 1700 hrs 19 May 1967.

Dr. Bunche Visits UNEF In Gaza

Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, Under-Secretary for Political Affairs, paid a four-day visit (1-5 July) here to the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF). The Commander, Major-General Indar Jit Rikhye received Dr. Bunche at Beirut and accompanied him to Gaza where the CAO, Mr. D.J. Sullivan, Chief of Staff Col. Einar Kiil, contingent commanders and heads of sections were present at the Gaza Airport to greet him. Later, Dr. Bunche awarded UN medals to one officer, one NCO and one OR from each of the five contingents of UNEF at a ceremonial parade held at parade square of NEF Support Group, Rafah.

Reception of the New Commander of UNEF at Beirut International Airport

Major-General Indar Jit Rikhye (India) arrived at Beirut International Airport today on his way to Gaza to assume his new duties as Commander of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF). He was appointed to his new post on 28 December 1965, after having served as Military Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, U Thant, since 1 January 1963. He succeeds General Syseno Sarmento (Brazil) whose tour of duty has expired

UNEF Strength to be Cut by 600

One hundred and twenty Canadians leave for home early next month as the decision to cut the strength of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in the Gaza Strip and the Sinai by 600 goes into effect. The Canadians - all members of the 56 Canadian Squadron (Princess Louisa's) - have started handing over peacekeeping duties on their 39 km stretch of the International Frontier between Egypt and Israel to Brazilian and Yugoslav Battalions of the Force. Canadian contribution to UNEF still remains substantial with 780 men and officers from that country performing important logistics and air support tasks. UNEF's strength, which is now 4,581, will be 3,959 after the cut.

Packing up for home is Trooper J. D. T. Dufour of the 56 Canadian Recce Squadron, whose unit is returning home early next month. 1966.

Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Army Visits UNEF

The Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Army, Lieutenant General Curt Goransson arrived in Gaza today to pay a visit to the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF). The Army Chief was accompanied by Mr. A. Paulsson, Chief Administrative Staff of the Minister of Defense of Sweden, Mr. N. Nilsell, Chief Finance Officer of the Civil Finance Board of the Swedish Armed Forces, and Lieutenant Colonel E. Schaltz, Chief Logistics of the UN-Division of the Swedish Army Staff.
