United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE) Meets at Stockholm

In response to rising world concern about the conditions of man’s habitat, representatives of some 130 nations converged on Stockholm, Sweden, this month in an unprecedented meeting to seek ways to translate that concern into a global attack on the common perils menacing the environment. The two-week UN Conference on the Human Environment (5-6 June) has been called by the General Assembly with the aim of producing an international political consensus on ways of preserving and improving the environment for this and future generations. About 1,200 delegates, many of them high-level decision-makers in government, are in Stockholm for the session, which is the first world-wild UN gathering to take a comprehensive look at man’s surroundings.

A view of the New Parliament Building in Stockholm where some of the Conference meetings are being held.

Bronze Bust of Pablo Casals on Display

A bronze portrait bust honoring the late Pablo Casals, musician and world citizen, was dedicated by Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim at a ceremony held in the Visitors' Lobby of the General Assembly building today. Pablo Casals performed in the General Assembly hall in 1958, on the occasion of the thirteenth anniversary of the UN and again in 1963, conducting his own "El Pessebre", and 1971. The bust is on permanent loan to the UN from the UN International School (UNIS). The portrait bust, done from life when the Maestro was at the UN in 1971, is the work of Robert Berks, sculptor of the Kennedy Monument in the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Washington, D.C., and busts of Einstein, Enrico Fermi, Pope Paul VI and Martin Luther King among others. It was given by Robert Howard, President of Centronics Data Computer Corporation, whose many other gifts to UNIS have included the International Courtyard Garden in the School's building at East 25th Street in Manhattan and the equipment for a mathematics laboratory, including a sophisticated educational computer installation.

A view of the portrait bust of Pablo Casals.
