Happy International Women's Day 2014! United Nations support for the rights of women began with the international framework declared in the UN Charter. Among the purposes of the UN declared in Article 1 of the Charter is "To achieve international co-operation... in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion." Women's rights are human rights and gender equality is an issue of universal concern.
The needs of children pervade the work of the United Nations system. From education programmes and efforts to abolish child labor, exploitation and abuse, from humanitarian help for children in the circumstances of violent conflicts and natural disasters to disease-eradication and anti-discrimination campaigns, the UN strives to protect children's human rights all over the world.
