Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity - as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. The United Nations will miss him dearly.
An estimated one billion disabled people worldwide currently live without equitable access to resources such as education, employment, healthcare and social and legal support systems. The 2006 Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities made some progress; however disability remains largely invisible in most development processes. The 2013 High-level Meeting on Disability (HLMD) aims to help realize full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society.
