Under the terms of an agreement between the Netherlands and Indonesia, the United Nations on 1 October 1962 assumed temporary executive responsibilities and administration of West New Guinea (West Irian). The administration of the territory will be transferred to Indonesia on 1 May 1963. Under the agreement, the inhabitants have the right to decide before the end of 1969 on whether they wish to remain with Indonesia or sever their ties.
