United Nations Day was celebrated this year on 24 October by delegates and staff members of U.N. with a cornerstone ceremony for the world organization's permanent Headquarters, now under construction in New York City. Scheduled as principal participants in the ceremony - marking U.N.'s fourth "birthday" - were President Harry S. Truman of the United States and U.N. Secretary-General Trygve Lie.
