Launch of International Year of Small Island Developing States
The International Year of Small Island Developing States (2014) was launched at a ceremony held at UN Headquarters. The Year will celebrate the contributions that this group of countries has made to the world. It will also help raise awareness of the 2014 Third UN Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which will take place in September in Apia, Samoa, and will focus on building partnerships for sustainable development.
Maxine Pamela Ometa McClean (centre), Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados, speaks at the event. She is flanked by Baron Divavesi Waqa (left), President of the Republic of Nauru; and Wu Hongbo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General for the Third International Conference on SIDS.
