Security Council Votes Unanimously to Increase Humanitarian Aid in Syria
In response to the severely deteriorating conditions in Syria and the continued impediments to delivering aid to civilians in need, the Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 2139 today. The Resolution reiterates its condemnation of human rights violations and urges Member States to provide direct support to neighbouring host countries to increase their ability to respond to the growing humanitarian needs. Additionally, the resolution demands all parties, including the Syrian authorities, allow rapid and safe humanitarian access across conflict lines and borders.
Bashar Ja'afari, Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the UN, addresses the Security Council in response to its adoption of Resolution 2139, demanding that Syrian authorities cease hostilities against civilians and allow safe passage for humanitarian aid.
