Assembly Elects Yugoslav Tribunal Judge, Palestine Takes Part in Election
The General Assembly elected Koffi Kumelio A. Afande of Togo as a permanent judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). In accordance with statute of the Tribunal, the Holy See and the State of Palestine, being non-member States which maintain permanent observer missions at UN Headquarters, took part in the election in the same manner as the States Members of the Organization. This was the first time that the State of Palestine cast a vote in the Assembly since it was accorded by the Assembly non-Member Observer State status in the United Nations last November.
