Security Council Debates Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (centre) addresses the Security Council open debate on protection of civilians in armed conflict. “Every day, humanitarian workers protect, feed, shelter, educate, heal and assist millions of people, regardless of who or where they are,” he said, addressing the Council on World Humanitarian Day. “It is an outrage that our colleagues and partners should be attacked for providing these essential services.” Mr. Ban is flanked by Rosemary A. DiCarlo (left), Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN; and Susana Ruiz Cerutti, Legal Adviser to the Argentine Foreign Ministry. Argentina holds the Security Council presidency for the month of August.
