Effects of Coal Mining in South Africa
The province of KwaZulu Natal, unique for its rich biodiversity, is one of South Africa's most important farming areas and suppliers of water. But its pristine natural beauty will be threatened if coal mining develops as it has in neighbouring Mpumalanga, where the mining industry has had detrimental environmental and social effects, including widespread water pollution.
