In the course of his current visit to ten member nations, UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld called on officials of the Government of Laos and met with UN personnel in Vientiane. The visit is one of a series of trips to member countries which the Secretary-General undertakes from time to time when his other responsibilities permit.
While in Vientiane, Mr. Hammarskjöld and his party took part in the Basi ceremony, a traditional Laotian way of honouring and wishing well to someone. Part of the ceremony involves the tying of cotton cords draped from bowls of flowers to the wrists of the person being honoured, while the Lao elders recite a blessing. From the right in this photograph, taken during the Basi ceremony, are: Foreign Minister Khamphan Panya; Mr. Hammarskjöld; and Mr. Pheng Phone Savan, President of the National Assembly.
