UNAVEM II Observes and Verifies Election in Angola
Voting unanimously in favour of resolution 747 (1992), the Security Council decided to expand the mandate of the United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM II) to include the verification of multi-party elections. To ensure that Angola’s first national elections are free and fair, the United Nations has undertaken the most extensive civilian helicopter airlift of people in its history, to bring the country’s 4.8 million registered voters from remote areas to polling stations. The elections are scheduled for 29 and 30 September.
Women are waiting outside a polling station in Sumbe town, to cast their votes during Angola’s first national elections.
