In September 1975 Egypt and Israel signed a new agreement and protocol relating to their forces in Sinai. Under the new agreement the UNEF buffer zone separating the forces of the two countries has been extended and now includes coastal areas along the Gulf of Suez. UNEF will continue to monitor the redeployment and limitation of forces. It will in addition use its good offices in the transfer of oilfields and the installations related to them among the Gulf of Suez; and will provide escort for Egyptian, Israeli and US personnel to surveillance sites in the early warning system to be established by the United States. Under the early warning system, which is to be set up in and around the Mitla and Giddi passes, Egypt and Israel will each have a surveillance station and the United States will have three watch stations manned by civilian technicians and four unmanned electronic sensor fields.
