Towards the end of 1962, the Indian Government informed the United Nations that its contingent serving with the UN forces in the Congo, needed to be recalled to strengthen India's own defences and in March of this year about 2,400 officers and men left for Bombay via Mombasa, where they embarked a US naval troop transport carrier. In a special message to the troops, UN Secretary-General U Thant expressed his appreciation and the gratitude of the United Nations for their services.
