On 6 October 1973 hostilities broke out again in the Middle East. The Security Council held several urgent meetings and on 22 October called for a cease-fire. Three days later, on 25 October, it decided to send a 7,000-man U.N. Emergency Force (UNEF) to the area to observe the cease-fire and to do its best to prevent a recurrence of the fighting.

A member of the Polish Logistic EODT, demonstrating the technique of mine searching with a stick to participants in a Mine Training Course given to Engineering Officers of all UNEF contingents as well as logistic teams to learn about various types of mines used by Egyptian and Israeli Armed Forces. The course was held at a mock-up minefield staged near Cairo.
