Australia's Ambassador to Washington, Norman J. O. Makin, who assumed presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the second time on 1 January 1947, in accordance with the system of monthly rotation of chairmanship in alphatebetical order of nations represented. Mr. Makin presided over the first meetings of the Council held in London, England, in January 1946.
