A funeral ceremony was held here today, with full military honors, for Colonel Justin McCarthy, of Ireland, Deputy Chief of staff, Headquarters, United Nations Force in the Congo (ONUC), who was killed in an automobile accident in this city early in the morning of 28 October. A solemn requiem high mass was sung at the Church of Ste. Marie, in the African quarter of the city.

Here is a view of a section of the funeral procession as it proceeded along Avenue Josephine Charlotte. The Irish pipe band with muffled drums played funeral marches along the route to the Leopoldville station, from where the body was taken to Matadi by train and then by ship to Ireland for interment.
