Following the appeal of the Central Congolese Government in early July 1960, UN troops were rushed to the Congo to assist the Government in maintaining law and order. Recently, the Government and the United Nations agreed on the gradual withdrawal of the UN contingents and earlier this year the Indian Brigade was recalled. In April the Ethiopian Brigade began to leave. In Stanleyville the departing troops were honoured at a ceremony, in which the National Congolese Army participated while thousands of civilians followed the festivities.
