Lieutenant General John Sanderson became an adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Cambodia in 1991. In this capacity he became Commander of the international military component of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). After completing this mission in October 1993, he returned to Australia to become the first Commander Joint Forces Australia. In 1995 he became Chief of the General Staff, a post that was renamed to Chief of Army in 1997. In this interview, conducted on 10 July 1998, Lieutenant General Sanderson shared his experiences in commanding the military component of UNTAC.
