Legal Scholar, Diplomat

Shabtai Rosenne was a renowned professor of international law and a distinguished diplomat who has represented Israel at many international conferences and the Israeli Government in cases before the International Court of Justice.

Mr. Rosenne received his LL.B. from the University of London in 1938 and his doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1959. He worked in the Political Department of the Jewish Agency in London and Jerusalem between 1946 and 1948. Mr. Rosenne served as a Legal Adviser to the Israeli Foreign Ministry from 1948 to 167. He was a member of the Israeli delegation to the 1949 Armistice Agreements, and of the International Law Commission established by the United Nations from 1962 to 1971. Mr. Rosenne was Vice Chairman of the Delegation to the First and Second United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. He also served as Chairman of the Delegation to the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea.

During the interview on 12 June 1990, Mr. Rosenne speaks of his activities at the time of the founding of the State of Israel, his role in the 1956 Suez War, and the period following, including the First United Nations Law of the Sea Conference in 1956.
