A UN spokesperson said Secretary-General António Guterres “deplores the loss of life in the protests” taking place in Iran.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (03 Jan), Farhan Haq said Guterres is following “with concern” recent developments in the Islamic Republic. He urged “respect for the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, and that any demonstrations take place in a peaceful manner” adding that “further violence must be avoided.”

Haq also reported that Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the reopening of the inter-Korean communication channel. He said, “It is always a positive development to have dialogue between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea.”

Haq said the UN remains committed to ensuring the implementation of Security Council resolutions on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and hopes “that enhanced diplomatic initiatives will help to achieve that goal.”
