“The Iraqi Government was and continues to be a government that is in harmony with its components and continues to work to promote constructive dialogue to resolve the remaining issues between the federal government and the government of the Iraqi Kurdistan region without preconditions. It is not possible in any way to accept the unconstitutional decision taken by the government of the Iraqi Kurdistan region and abandon the unity of Iraq which is guaranteed by the constitution.”

“The Iraqi Government has appealed to the Supreme Court to issue loyalty decision rejecting the referendum process which is supposed to be conducted on the 25th of September 2017 in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, and constitutes a grave violation to the Iraqi constitution, especially regarding the status of the disputed areas which feature a variety of ethnicities, sects, and religions, which would lead to internal and regional conflicts.”

STORYLINE:

Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jafari said his government rejects the “unconstitutional decision” of the Iraqi Kurdistan region to conduct a referendum for independence next week.

Speaking at the General Assembly today (23 Sep) Al-Jafari said his government was and continues to be “in harmony with its components and continues to work to promote constructive dialogue to resolve the remaining issues between the federal government and the government of the Iraqi Kurdistan region without preconditions.”

The Iraqi Foreign Minister said Iraq’s unity is guaranteed by the first article of the constitution adding that his Government appealed to the Supreme Court to issue a “loyalty decision rejecting the referendum process”. He said the referendum, set to be conducted on Monday, would constitute “a grave violation to the Iraqi constitution, especially regarding the status of the disputed areas which feature a variety of ethnicities, sects, and religions, which would lead to internal and regional conflicts.”
