STORYLINE:

The United Nations mission in Mali (MINUSMA) bid farewell today (13 Sep) to three fallen peacekeepers who perished last week.

Two Chadian peacekeepers, Second-Lieutenant Officer Abdelkerim Mahamat Dahab, and Sergeant Moussa Oumar Ali, were killed and another two were seriously injured when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) on 5 September in Aguelhok. Captain Massamaesso Tangaou from Burkina Faso passed away on 7 September as a result of a heart attack.

The ceremony took place at the MINUSMA Headquarter in Bamako in the presence of the UN Deputy Special Representative to Mali, Koen Davidse , and the Force Commander of MINUSMA, General Jean-Paul Deconick, among other dignitaries.

Deconick said the “the enemies of peace” have no regard for the lives of others adding that they “strike indiscriminately soldiers, civilians, and children.” He said the entire MINUSMA force mourns the death of their colleagues and stressed that the mission would continue to fight in Mali “for peace, for security, [and] for the Malian people.”

The bodies of the fallen soldiers were repatriated to their respective countries following the ceremony. Mali is considered the deadliest UN peacekeeping mission. So far this year, 86 UN peacekeepers have been killed in the country.
