In northern Uganda water is in short supply.

It’s a daily struggle.

Kiden is a refugee from South Sudan.

She gets 10 litres of water a day to drink, cook and wash if she is lucky.

SOUNDBITE (English) Kiden Rose, South Sudanese Refugee:
“We stay sometimes three days without water.”

Most refugees depend on water trucked from the River Nile.

The water has to be treated in plants like this one.

1 million litres are needed every day.

But on average less than half is available.

James trucks water to refugee settlements.

SOUNDBITE (English) James Kato, Ugandan Truck Driver:
“All the vehicles are getting water from there. You can find a line of about one hundred metres when the vehicles are parking looking for water.”

He says somedays refugees don’t get any water at all.

SOUNDBITE (English) James Kato, Ugandan Truck Driver:
“They tell us: We need water. Why don’t you bring us water?”

Refugees have been waiting here for water since yesterday. It runs out quickly. Every drop counts.

Kiden hopes to fill her jerry-can today. Finally the wait is over.

SOUNDBITE (English) Kiden Rose, South Sudanese Refugee:
“If you get the water you will be happy.”
